Cosy Retreat

Olde Blue Bell Cottage
Mary is a great host. She rapidly responded to all my enquiries and was really helpful in arranging an early check in. The cottage is clean and neat. It worked really well for us travelling with young kids with smaller bowls and cutlery etc. there were lots of board games that all got a work out. It was warm, everything worked, there was loads of towels and the bath is big enough for an adult, let alone kids! It rained constantly and was windy and cold but the cottage was indeed cosy and a welcome retreat. Mary’s hospitality was top notch and when we had a minor problem she was quickly there and fixed it up. I would not hesitate to recommend the cottage to all future guests!

Lovely location & space

Olde Blue Bell Barn is in a lovely location in a small village. Close to the coast and the lakes by car. Really lovely space with great views over the hills.

A great place to stay

Mary is the perfect host, a genuinely lovely lady that goes out of her way to make your stay perfect with some tips on local attractions and walks. The place was spot on and sparkling clean. The upstairs lounge and kitchen area is very cosy and we found it hard to stay awake on the super comfy sofas.

Lovely place to stay

Lovely place to stay. The host is a great communicator and if you have any questions her replies are super fast! The accommodation was better than we expected and had a really professional feel. The carpets are lovely and swishy, the underfloor heating in the bathroom was a nice treat and the whole accommodation was lovely and cosy. A really homely place to stay and superbly clean. Definitely worth staying for longer than two nights to make the most of it!

The Coach House

Lovely, spacious, comfortable and well equipped cottage with a lovely secure garden for Polly (the dog). We stayed for a week in September and found it ideally situated for visits to Lakes, Yorkshire and Lancashire. Nearest supermarket is Booths in Milnthorpe and just 5 mins down the road. Lovely walks on the doorstep especially the deer park. Loved going down to Arnside, especially for fish and chips and to Bob in Cafe, food excellent at both. And last, but not least a big thank you to Mary for making us feel most welcome.

Olde Blue Bell Barn

This is the second year that we have stayed at Olde Blue Bell Barn. It is a delightful property, very clean, well equipped, comfortable and with lovely views from the upstairs lounge/dining room. Our dog appreciated the snuggle blanket which was provided for her use. We received a very warm welcome from Mary shortly after we arrived and enjoyed the tea and biscuits which were waiting for us. Mary also provided plenty of local knowledge and ideas for our holiday. The cottage is an ideal base for exploring the Lake District and also the Yorkshire Dales and Lancashire. We found plenty of interesting places to visit and walks to do. Obviously we walked up Heversham Head to watch the sunset (I put down the used dog bag almost at the top in a field of cows so that I could take a photograph and forgot to pick it up. When we got back to the Church, I realised my mistake and we walked back, found it and disposed of it correctly!). We enjoyed several trips into Arnside, where we walked up Arnside Knott, enjoyed chips from the chippy and watched the Arnside bore. We had a very good meal at The Albion in Arnside. For a rainy day, we recommend the Lakeland Motor Museum. Thank you for a lovely stay. We hope to come again and we have already recommended the cottage to friends.

Great cottage and location

We have just returned from a week staying at Olde Blue Bell Cottage and it was perfect. The location of the cottage is perfect for visiting the South Lakes. Very dog friendly and Mary is a lovely host making us feel very welcome. The cottage itself is cosy and clean with everything you need for a perfect stay, comfortable beds, fluffy towels and touches like not having to buy all of the essentials as they are already there. Great holiday and highly recommend.

Fantastic Hostess

Stayed in the cottage for 1 week. The cottage is well equipped and has a lovely ambience. The cottage is clean and very homely. The proprietor (Mary) is so welcoming, giving excellent advice on the local area. Nothing is too much trouble and we were made to feel so welcome. I cannot praise this establishment enough. If you go to the lakes, then this is the best accommodation to stay in. I Will recommend this to anyone looking for lovely accommodation and relaxing break.

A wonderful base in the Lakes

We have been at the Coach House for 2 weeks and can honestly say that it’s one of the nicest we have stayed in. The property itself is modern and well appointed with all of the home comforts you might require. It’s extremely dog friendly (the even provide snuggle blankets). Mary (the owner) lives close by and is both friendly and helpful. The South Lakes are all in very easy reach and there’s plenty of good walking for the dogs. The nearest supermarket is a Booths which is 5 minutes drive away and the Heversham Hotel serves decent food and is a short walk from the cottage. If you have children there is also a playground in the village.

Thank you so much for your lovely review, I'm so glad to hear that you found the Coach House a comfortable base for your holiday. It really is a beautiful area. So nice to meet you all. Mary

The Coach House

We stayed at the Coach House at the end of March and had a truly enjoyable stay in beautiful surroundings. Mary was so welcoming and a font of knowledge. The accommodation was all we could ask for, a real home from home, everything that was necessary for a perfect holiday. Would love to have stayed for a second week! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

I have just spent a week at Olde Bluebell Barn. It’s a lovely place and the pictures do not do it justice. I could quite easily live there. It is ideally located and is such a lovely place. Mary is very warm, friendly and helpful. I just cannot fault the accommodation and hope to return there very soon. Best place I have stayed in so far with the dog. Also the double bed is very comfortable. I was sad to leave.

Home from Home

This year was our fourth year back at Blue Bell Cottage, we had a wonderful holiday the cottage is conveniently located for easy access to the rest of the lakes. There are plenty of lovely walks close by if you don’t want to travel to far such as Sandside, Arnside, Levens Park and Dallam Park. There’s plenty of local pubs serving excellent food within a 10 minute drive the Hare and Hounds at Leven and the Watermill at Ings are both worth a visit. Mary is a gem nothing is to much trouble for her and she’s the font of all knowledge about the Lake District. We’ve already booked to come back next year and can’t wait our family and dogs love it!

Fantastic Cottage

Fantastic location just 8 minutes from M6 motorway with easy access to travel around the Lake District yet located in a lovely quiet village. Many lively walks within easy reach, great if like us you have a dog. The cottage is well equipped with everything you need for a very comfortable stay including a lovely enclosed garden area with table and access to a BBQ, again great if you have a dog or small children. The cottage is very cosy with heating if needed, a new modern bathroom and well equipped kitchen. This is our fifth year staying in the cottage and the owner, Mary is absolutely lovely, nothing is any bother, she has become more of a friend over the years. Cannot recommend the cottage highly enough and great value too. Plenty of really good restaurants and pubs nearby and short joirney time to May places of interest such as Arnside, Kendal, Keswick and Lake Windemere. We’ll certainly be back again!

My husband and I have just spent three days/nights here and it was wonderful. The pictures of the cottage are fab but even they can’t do justice to how welcome and at home you feel when you walk through the door. The location is also fantastic because you feel remote, yet in just one mile you have a super restaurant, shops, pubs, butchers etc., and great local walks too (all thanks to Mary’s information folder!). We really felt spoilt for choice. A fantastic break that I wish had been longer!

The Coach House was perfect for our friend’s reunion weekend. Spacious but very warm and cosy so didn’t care about the weather outside!! Would definitely recommend to others

Our grandson was immediately taken with the “upside down” cottage we loved the fantastic views. The cottage was warm, clean and well equipped and owners were very helpful and supplied plenty of local info within the cottage. We found it to be the perfect base for exploring, just so much to do every day. Our grandson Jack (4yrs) told us “It’s the best holiday ever” what more could you ask!

Just got back from a great week at the cottage, it’s in a good location with easy access to the rest of the Lakes, we visited Bowness on Windermere, Keswick, Kendal, Dallam and Levens Parks, Fell Foot and Arnside coastal walk, our dogs thoroughly enjoyed their holiday. Lovely walk 2 minutes away up to Heversham Head. Mary was really helpful so much information we were spoilt for choice where to visit first. Local pub 2 minutes’ walk away is great for an evening drink and wind down.

Olde Blue Bell Barn, Sharon, July 2013
4 of us stayed in The Barn and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Location-wise, the local pub is only a five-minute walk away; the village centre only a five-minute drive. We took our Staffie with us and there were plenty of walks for us to enjoy. Accommodation-wise, the scenery from the lounge window was breath-taking. The rooms were clean, comfortable and warm. The welcome pack listed all local amenities including restaurants to takeaways and local attractions. Overall we were all very impressed 🙂

The Coach House, Stuart Pratt, February 2013
We stayed in the wonderful cottage for four nights, and can honestly say that the amenities and quality of accommodation was 5 star, everything you need for your stay is provided along with tea, coffee and other provisions provided by the owner Mary when you arrive. Location and surrounding area is perfect for Windermere and Arnside. Our children loved the cottage and will most definitely not be using any other accommodation as I believe this cannot be bettered.

Olde Blue Bell Barn, Nick Blunt, September 2012
We returned to the cottage after having stayed 10 years previous! The cottage has a fantastic view and is well equipped with all the home comforts, pets are very welcome and it is a great base for exploring the south lakes .the owners are nearby if you need any advice or information on days out. We will definitely be returning in the future.

The Coach House, Tony & Gina, September 2012
We have just spent a week at The Coach House celebrating my wife’s parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. We really enjoyed our stay as the accommodation and location were excellent. The house is a credit to Mary and really does feel like a home from home. As for the location, this was our 1st visit to The Lakes and The Coach House gave us excellent access to all the beauty spots including Ambleside, Bowness etc. Kendal is also a stone’s throw away for all your shopping needs. We hope to return.
